Czech Post introduced a commemorative stamp from the series Personalities portraying Tomáš Baťa, Wednesday 16 March 2016. The stamp marks the 140th anniversary of birth of the renowned Czechoslovak entrepreneur and creator of a global shoemaking empire that falls on 03 April 2016. The event was attended by Tomáš Baťa’s great-grandson Thomas Archer Bata.

The stamp, designed by graphic artist Eva Hašková and engraved by Jaroslav Tvrdoň, was printed by two-colour rotary recess printing. The face value is CZK 13. The stamp was printed by Czech Security Printing Company in the volume of 600 000.

The ceremony was attended by Tomáš Baťa’s great-grandson Thomas Archer Bata who briefly thanked for the issuing of the stamp and together with Czech Post’s Director General Martin Elkán unveiled the stamp.

“Today, the entire world knows Baťa’s name, and many of us are proud of our compatriot and ‘shoe king’ Tomáš Baťa who, together with his siblings, founded the shoe manufacturing company in Zlín. He used revolutionary procedures for his time, and positively influenced not only the city of Zlín, whose mayor he was, but also the entire Czechoslovakia where he tried to implement projects of long-distance railway, air, river, and road transportation,” said Mr. Martin Elkán, adding: “I am pleased that Czech Post can pay tribute to this great personality with this newly issued postage stamp.”

The programme included a 1993 commemorative documentary film, Tomáš Baťa I, by directors Jaroslav Bařinka and Miloslav Kučera, shown at the ceremony venue in the Main Post Office hall on Jindřišská street, Prague.
